Kidnappers Attack Three Schools in Oyo, Kill Teacher and Abduct Staff
A violent attack on several schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has sparked national outrage after gunmen killed a teacher and abducted several staff members and students.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Friday when armed motorcycle bandits stormed three schools simultaneously. The affected schools include Baptist Nursery and Primary School Yawota, Community High School Esiele, and L.A. Primary School Esile.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived heavily armed and began shooting sporadically, creating panic among students and staff. In the chaos, a headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, reportedly tried to escape through a window but was shot dead by the attackers.
A commercial motorcycle rider who unknowingly rode into the scene was also killed after refusing to surrender his motorcycle to the gunmen.
Tragically, a mathematics teacher at Community High School, Michael Oyedokun, was captured and later beheaded by the assailants. Sources claim the attackers circulated a video of the killing as a warning to security forces who were already moving toward the area.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the gunmen abducted several victims and used a principal’s vehicle to transport some students. However, the car was later abandoned and set on fire after it reportedly developed mechanical problems. The attackers then fled toward the forest reserve around Old Oyo National Park.
Security agencies quickly mobilized in response. Personnel from the police, local hunters, and the regional security outfit Amotekun Corps launched a pursuit operation within the forest reserve.
Reports indicate the gunmen engaged security forces in a gun battle before retreating further into the forest, allegedly attempting to lure pursuing officers into an improvised explosive device (IED) trap. The explosion reportedly injured one security operative.
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, confirmed that seven teachers were kidnapped during the attack and that one of them has been killed. The number of missing students is still being verified.
Meanwhile, security reinforcements including the Nigerian Army have been deployed to surround the forest area in an effort to prevent the attackers from escaping to neighboring states.
Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has assured the public that authorities are working to rescue the kidnapped victims.
Authorities have also confirmed that at least six suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
Local residents say they had previously raised concerns about suspicious activities around the Old Oyo National Park area, but claim their warnings were not acted upon.
The situation remains developing and further updates are expected as security operations continue.

When Nnamdi Kanu began speaking about killings and marginalisation affecting Igbo communities, the movement associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra was eventually declared a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government.
2026-05-18 21:48:51Supporters argue that at the early stage the agitation focused mainly on protests and calls for self-determination, yet the response involved arrests and deadly crackdowns, including incidents reported in Oyigbo during the 2020 crisis.
These events continue to raise difficult questions about how the Nigerian state handles separatist movements, ethnic tensions, and security operations across different regions.
